Sake Maki: Vancouver's Top Sushi Bar on Commercial Dr

This place is okay... i felt like the service was a little slow and the freshness of the fish wasnt as good as some other sushi places on the Drive/in Vancouver area. I felt the specialty roll had wayyyy too much mayo/sauce -- you can see in the photo... its a lot a lot... made the roll hard to finish for me (not the biggest fan of a lot of mayo.)

Ate here December 16th, one of the best sushi experiences I've had in Vancouver. Incredible fresh ingredients, super friendly staff , atmosphere is adorable and inviting. Food is so tasty i double ordered for takeout.

We had a truly joyful dinner at SAKE MAKI Japanese Restaurant on Commercial Drive on the evening of December 24th — a night made even more special as it was also my son’s birthday . The warm, welcoming atmosphere felt perfect for celebrating both Christmas Eve and a family milestone. From the moment we arrived, the restaurant gave off a cozy, authentic Japanese vibe that immediately put us at ease. The food was outstanding and deeply rooted in traditional Japanese flavors . Each dish was carefully prepared, well-balanced, and full of character. The freshness of the ingredients and the simplicity of the presentation brought me back to my time working in Japan for nearly half a year — a nostalgic and heartfelt experience that I truly appreciated. What made the evening even more memorable was the chef himself. He was incredibly friendly, open, and passionate about his craft. With over 40 years of experience in the food industry, his dedication was evident not only in the food but also in how he interacted with guests. Upon learning that it was my son’s birthday, he kindly surprised us with two complimentary desserts, personally prepared as a thoughtful gesture. SAKE MAKI is more than just a place to eat — it’s a place where food, warmth, and genuine hospitality come together. A hidden gem well worth visiting.

A nice mom and pop sushi restaurant with kind down to earth service and affordable prices. The sashimi sushi combo was great in that the sashimi fish was fresh and melted in your mouth and it comes with a miso soup. The oyster motoyaki was good but could have a more browned crisper top and the shrimp tempura batter was thicker than other places but still tasty. The rice to fish ratio for the nigiri was perfect. Solid for typical sushi.

They have daily rotating specials on their website! Ordered in person a BOGO dynamite roll and it was bomb! The prawn tempura was crispy and fresh - not some old tempura waiting to be turned into a roll. Staff was friendly and efficient processing my order. Delicious, they've won my returning business!

Awesome place. The food was delicious. High quality sushi. From where I was sitting I was able to see the chef making the sushi. She was a brilliant, hardworking professional who clearly cared about every dish she prepared. It was genuinely fun to watch her practice her craft.

I love this place, it feels authentic! The atmosphere is great: the origami birds, the Japanese music, the plates. I would give the food 20/10, the chef is always so focused preparing the plates. And the drinks are made with soda from Japan. Give it a try, you won't regret it!

I’m so lucky to live very close, like I literally live above this place. It’s the best. Getting to know the family and becoming friends with them is a cherry on top of this incredible food. I order from here often, too often one might say? Probably. But I just can’t help myself. The food is always on point, and I’m pretty picky having grown up in a diner myself. Not only is the sushi amazing, the dinner special is a steal of a deal. Everytime I have guest from out of town I order here and everyone is always blown away. 10/10 all around, best sushi on the drive for sure. Always fresh, always friendly, saki maki forever!
